We went from two door sedans to four door coupes. Now that what I call progress!

Wikipedia has some good info on the different definitions of sedan coupe etc. I thought the same thing when I first saw a 2-door referred to as a sedan.

Well, in the case of the Vega, for whatever buffoonish reason they had both a "sedan" and a "coupe", with the roofline being about the only thing different at a quick glance. It was almost more of a notchback/fastback distinction, really, (indeed, they later called it a notchback) which they then bolluxed up by offering the Kammback (which wasn't a kammback hatch but a wagon), and which was confused in the first place by the "coupe" being actually a hatch.
Just... damn, GM. You didn't half-ass making everything about the Vega twisted in its own little way.

I think in this instance it's differentiating between the fastback and the more formal roofline.

Yes, this. The "coupe"-formerly-known-as-a-hatchback, and the notchback-formerly-known-as-a-sedan-formerly-known-to-sane-people-as-a-coupe.
Visible b-pillars on both, of course.

Then you look at the Mustang where the "coupe" is the formal roof while the fastback or "sportback" was the swoopy one. What it all boils down to is that when marketing is involved words have no meanings.

I'm okay with coupe meaning "normal two door with light slope" and fastback/etc. meaning "you wanted a trunk? No? I didn't think so". In this instance, I think Ford's terminology sins are the lesser, at least in light of how Mustangs tend to punish the rear seat passengers even with the "formal" roof. If it hurts to sit in the back seat, and it's not a liftback or otherwise ridiculous, it's probably close to being a coupe.

I know, right? The best part is them shipping the windshield washer bottles full, but in a special cradle so in return to uprightness they'd fall into (allegedly permanent) place. Couldn't have just one thing filled at the dealer, dammit, every fluid had to be ready to go. That one factoid should tell you everything you need to know about the derangement of 70s GM.
